High Risk Drinking

The first 6 weeks of college are often termed the “Red Zone,” as college and university students are most likely to become victims of crime during this time. It is not a coincidence that the first six weeks of college are said to determine “whether many college students make it to their second year of school or drop out for reasons related to binge drinking and drug use” (http://www.drug-addiction.com/news/college-alcohol-prevention.htm). About 1/3 of first-year college students don’t enroll for their sophomore year, a phenomenon widely attributed to binge drinking and drug abuse.

Binge drinking is a serious problem on our nation’s college campuses. It often turns deadly; each year, approximately 1400 college students die due to alcohol related injuries. Many more are sexually assaulted, otherwise injured, or arrested.

Excessive alcohol use is not only dangerous in the short term, it can also set the stage to long-term problematic drinking issues.
